So I was messing around in class when I was pointed in the direction of a little something called "Kaizo Mario World"

It's a rom-hack of the original super mario world for SNES.

It is evil-incarnate.

I'm decently good at platformers (Donkey Kong Country aside) but jesus christ, I can't make it more than 40 seconds into the first level. Immediately in front of you, there is a five stacked high tower of Bullet Bill launchers. Whatever, speed jump over them. Then do you know what you have to do? YOU HAVE TO "RIDE" THE FIVE BBS ACROSS A GAP NEARLY TWO AND A HALF SCREEN LENGTHS TO THE NEXT ISLAND.

I'm told Kaizo is Japanese for "Madness"

So, I'm at work right now, but I worked some secret hacker voodoo on the wireless here (read: we have wireless at work now) so I guess now that I've got time on my hands (and hot sauce! Mmmmmm... wings)

So I don't know if any of you are up to date on this, but down in Nebraska, they have what they're calling the 'Safe Haven Law' which basically allows ANY American child to be left at say or a hospital, police station or child services office, and the kids will become wards of the state. In effect allowing parents to abandon their kids. Most states of a similar law, but with limits that the child is from the state and under a certain age (usually 30 days). The law in Nebraska has no such limits.

Lately there have been many cases of parents from other states dropping off teenagers. Rowdy 14 and 15 year olds, suddenly being told 'we don't love you (enough/anymore/at all)' and being placed as wards of the state. It's pretty sickening on the surface, but then I thought. If you're the type of person who is even CONSIDERING abandoning your kids they're probably better off there. The more I think about that last point, the more I think it's a useful if slightly... awkward solution.

But the other day they changed the law, adding an age clause. Now the child being handed over to the state has to be within 30 days old. I really don't approve.

Video game time!

Games Adam is playing and/or soon to be playing, and his thoughts on such.

Gears of War 2 = A+. They took everything that was great about the first Gears and made it better. Much better.

Call of Duty 5 = A. I'm playing the single player mode on the PC, and my awkwardness with going back to a PC shooter aside, it's very good. I am a little disappointed with the return to WWII, but so far there has been a lot of emphasis on the Pacific and Russian campaigns, which generally don't get a lot of spotlight in the WWII genre. I like it, but at the same time I can't help but wonder what the other developer who handles the Call of Duty games, Infinity Ward would have done with it.

Rock Band 2 = A++. The new guitar and drum controllers are fantastic. The drums in particular are markedly better, the pads are much quieter and the pedal is reinforced with a piece of metal. No more dongle! Each controller is wireless (even the drums!). Song selection is also great.

Fallout 3 = Do. Want. Haven't got my hands on this one yet, but a buddy from class is going to get me the PC copy next monday. Do want x1000. Oblivion + guns = Wintrillion.

Left 4 Dead = Do. Want. Dude. guns. Zombies. Win. I am going to be picking up a legit copy soonish. The online play will be fantastic.
